We play the traditional music of our region. The town of Técső is situated in Southwestern Ukraine just across the Tisza River from the region of Transylvania known as ’Maramures’. Our diverse repertoire – because of the mixture of ethnic groups in the area – features local Romanian, Gypsy, Jewish, Russian, Ruthenian, Hutzul and Hungarian tunes. We are one of the most well-known bands in the area. Our accordionist, Jóska Csernavec, his late brother and his cousin are descendants of a reputed Gypsy music dynasty. The band’s violinist is from another such family. All of us have inherited and learned the musical style from our families. The first recordings of us were made at the beginning of the 1970’s. At that time, the legendary musician Jura Csernevec ’Manyo’ (Joska’s father) was still the fiddler. Unfortunately, his virtuoso playing survived only on one single bad quality cassette. Today we are hired regularly to play at local weddings, funerals, other holiday celebrations all over our region such as the annual ’Misána’ festival (spring sheep-shearing). The instruments include violin, ’laptop’ cymbalom, bajan (local button accordion) and drum equipped with a cymbal. Our drummer also uses a kind of duck-call –which they call plonka. It is a small plastic piece inserted in the mouth and played by pressing it between the lower teeth and gums dance tunes. The Técső Band plays often in Hungary and has participated in festivals such as the Sziget Festival, Mediawave, Kapolcs Arts Festival, National Dance House Festival and the Seven Towers Festival. At our concerts one can hear traditional wedding music and dance music played for other holiday occaisions.
